The Group Insurance and Benefits Committee meets the 2nd or 3rd Tuesday of each month (coordinates with Faculty Senate meetings to avoid conflict for members of both committees) from 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. in Room 101 of the Administrative Services III Building.

Call to Order: Holly Durham, Chair, called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m.

Minutes: The Committee reviewed and approved the April 14, 2014 meetingminutes.

GIBC Objectives: Holly Durham, Chair, reviewed the Committee Charge and discussed the purpose of GIBC.

Committee Charge

GIBC was created in accordance with North Carolina General Statute §58-31-60. The Group Insurance and Benefits Committee is concerned with all types of group insurance and retirement programs for employees. It is also concerned with other fringe benefits that promote the welfare of the faculty and/or staff of the University.
It is the responsibility of the Committee to make policy recommendations to the Benefits Office relative to maintaining and strengthening our present programs and developing new programs. The Benefits Office will then forward these recommendations as appropriate to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Human Resources who will carry forward pertinent issues to the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Business.
The committee is charged with advising the Associate Vice Chancellor of Human Resources on matters related to developing strategies to encourage healthy behaviors in the workplace and creating a health-friendly work environment for faculty and staff.
Consult with the Faculty Senate’s Personnel Policy Committee for consideration of policies, procedures or other matters pertaining to faculty concerns.

40 hours bonus leave for any leave earning employee hired prior to September 1, 2014. Does not include Post docs.

Saving for Your Future

The goal is to help employees understand the benefits of saving for retirement, and to streamline the process for signing up forsupplemental retirement plans.

Several ice cream events have been done across campus to promote “Saving for Your Future”.
Additional events are being planned. (donuts and hot chocolate, pizza)

Service Awards

The Service Award program will be re-launched soon. All those who attained service milestones in 2013 and 2014 will be recognized.

Annual Enrollment

The Annual Enrollment period will take place October 1 – 31, 2014. The choices that employees make during this period will become effective January 1, 2015.

Employees in the 80/20 or CDHP plans must complete the wellness activities (health assessment & smoking attestation) by October 31, 2014 if they want to receive the lower monthly premiums.

A change to the dental plans for 2015 is the waiting periods. There are no longer waiting periods for dental plans except for orthodontic benefits.

Employees must re-enroll in the flexible spending accounts to have them in 2015.

Adjournment: Holly Durham, Chair asked for recommendations of guest speakers for upcoming meetings. One recommendation was a speaker for the fit challenge. The meeting was adjourned at 4:45 p.m. The next GIBC meeting will be on October 14 at 3:30 p.m. in Administrative II Building Room 101.
