Faculty/Librarian Collaboration: Shooting Wars

Jason Evans Groth and Marsha Gordon presented their collaborative work, Shooting Wars, which illustrates how librarians and faculty members can work together to create something that would not be possible on their own, by taking advantage of resources outside of their own department. Project utilized Commons Wall originally, and grew to include interactive components within the Game Lab (Hunt Library). The Game Lab proved to be an excellent space, because the content was of a graphic nature – privacy glass shielded visuals from patrons. Project created a model for future collaborations.

Budget and Outlook

SKN reviewed how campus wide budget cuts have been an issue since 2008, and how the Libraries has 14% fewer staff than before Hunt Library was open. Collections have continued to be an issue, with cuts impacting serials and monographs. Students expressed ongoing concern and made complaints to campus administrators about the cut to library hours. The support from administration in the form of enrollment increase allowed the Libraries to restore those hours (24×5 in Hill and Hunt).

Plans for the NCSU Libraries include:

  • Investing in collections despite budget cuts, providing students and faculty with excellent resources;
  • Transforming the analytical and collaborative roles of research librarians;
  • Renovating space at Hill to provide similar spaces as Hunt
    • Including transforming the Hill of Beans to a Starbucks (University Dining)
  • Increasing efficiencies, productivity, and impact despite reduced staffing;
  • Embodying the idea of an academic library as research platform and technology incubator;

Also noted: Academic Affairs is interested in using individual graduate student study rooms for tutoring, which could reduce space available at a time when we haven’t reached minimum seating requirements. Members asked if a tutorial center could be integrated nearby, but not within the library (will new construction in the Harrelson space be an option?) or if Talley has any spaces available.
