Announcements and Acknowledgments

Susan Nutter announced that the Libraries expects to receive its allocation of enrollment increase money next fiscal year and that the continuation of this allocation make the Libraries’ future more secure.

Proposed Schedule of Hours

After reviewing the proposed schedule of hours for the summer 2015, fall 2015, and spring 2016 semesters, a member asked if an appropriate use of the enrollment increase money might be to extend hours. Nutter said that this could be a possibility, and that we would need to also review other areas within the Libraries that may be lacking funds (particularly collections).

The question of whether or not the coffee shops (in Hill and Hunt) should remain open until the library closes was raised, based on feedback from students and faculty. Currently, the coffee shops – which are managed by University Dining – close an hour before the library closes, or at 1:00am if the library is open 24 hours. This is a matter that the ULC could consider presenting to University Dining.

ULC Concerns Regarding Funding – Draft Letter

The committee discussed a draft letter to the Provost regarding the systemic problem with the Libraries’ budget due to serials inflation.

Paul Williams pointed out that Faculty Senate has also raised concerns regarding lack of funding, and Mitchell Moravec confirmed that the Libraries frequently comes up during Student Senate meetings (most recently, the proposed hours were discussed during the President’s Roundtable). Amember suggested that the lack of funding could be added to the Student Senate agenda.

A suggestion was made to invite the Provost and the new Vice Provost of Finance and Business (to be recruited) to a ULC meeting in the fall. It was suggested that the Chair of the Faculty Senate should be invited to that meeting as well, given the resolutions from the Faculty Senate regarding the Libraries’ funding. The letter from the ULC (including the members from this academic year) would be provided as background.

D.H. Hill Makerspace

David Woodbury presented updates regarding the D.H. Hill Makerspace. He pointed out that the Libraries aims to have this space act collaboratively with other Makerspaces on campus. Since the Libraries offers trainings and one-on-one assistance from a staff member, the staff is targeting beginner to intermediate users, who can then spin off and take advantage of the more advanced facilities on campus, such as the Garage, Crafts Center, Open Hardware Makerspace, CIRCUIT Studio, and the Technology, Engineering & Design Education Laboratories.  After Woodbury’s presentation, ULC members were able to visit the Makerspace, which is scheduled to open soon.
